Arm Lift
An arm lift, also known as brachioplasty, removes lax, excess, sagging skin from the upper arms which occurs often with age and weight fluctuations. Diet and exercise cannot tighten excess skin, which can cause discomfort and a lack of confidence. Only an arm lift can immediately address excess skin on the upper arm and every procedure is designed to suit the needs and goals of the patient. An arm lift can sculpt and reshape the upper arm from the shoulder to the elbow, and is often paired with liposuction to remove stubborn fat deposits.
There are three primary types of brachioplasty:
Standard Brachioplasty
Limited Incision Brachioplasty
Extended Brachioplasty
The standard brachioplasty removes a moderate amount of skin and adipose tissue from the upper arm, and often includes liposuction. A limited incision brachioplasty requires a shorter incision and is best for patients whose excess skin and fat is close to the armpit. An extended brachioplasty extends the incision from a standard brachioplasty to the chest region and can be useful for patients with excessive, unwanted chest or breast tissue or who create an unwanted bulge with their bra strap.
Benefits of An Arm Lift
The benefits of an arm lift include:
Immediate, long-lasting results
Arm lifts help a person appear younger and more slender
The exact location and length of the incision is based on the patient and in some cases can be hidden under short sleeves
Reduces or eliminates chafing and rubbing caused by excess arm skin
Brachioplasty can also be part of a “mommy makeover,” which is a term used to describe a combination of surgeries some women opt for when they are post-partum. However, you do not need to be a parent (or even a woman) to work with a Spectrum Plastic Surgery doctor in choosing your suite of surgeries. An arm lift isn’t as commonly picked in a mommy makeover as a tummy tuck, breast augmentation, or liposuction, but it is a popular procedure for both men and women. A thigh lift is another popular plastic procedure that may complement an arm lift.

More Information on Arm Lifts and Recovery
The recovery for a brachioplasty is dependent on the type of arm lift you have and your general health. Since many patients combine a brachioplasty with other surgical procedures, recovery times are not standardized. On average, a full brachioplasty requires 1 – 2 weeks of rest and time off of work for most occupations. Most patients can resume driving after about 10 days.
Swelling and bruising is expected immediately after the procedure. It’s important to have someone you trust to help take care of you and your needs for a few days after your procedure. Most patients have brachioplasty on both arms, which can make basic self-care a challenge for up to one week. Patients can often return to exercise and most activities of daily living about 4 – 6 weeks after the procedure. Your specific timeline will be detailed prior to your surgery as you work with Spectrum Plastic Surgery doctors to customize your procedure.
